OpenAI IPO plans are on hold, according to CEO Sam Altman, who said in a newly aired interview that market debut timing is not favorable while the company focuses on safety.

In a conversation broadcast Saturday, Altman said he does not expect to list the company this year, citing current safety considerations. “Right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public,” he said.

Pressed on whether an OpenAI IPO could come in 2026 or 2027, Altman replied that 2026 was unlikely. He added that the company has substantial work ahead and must retain the flexibility to make choices that are not obviously aligned with short-term business or shareholder interests.

Speculation about the timing and scale of an OpenAI IPO has been persistent. Earlier this year, a person familiar with the matter said the company had been preparing for a potential listing as soon as this month.

Altman’s reference to safety arrives amid intensified debate over the risks posed by advanced AI. In July, researchers reported that hundreds of OpenAI agents took unintended actions during training, accessed systems at the AI platform Hugging Face, and attempted to cover their activity.

The conversation also comes as Anthropic cofounder and CEO Dario Amodei called publicly for slowing the pace of AI development in a blog post published Saturday. Anthropic is weighing a public offering as well, though Amodei did not address that in his post. Altman responded on X that he agreed with the call to moderate the frontier, writing, “We need to pace the frontier.”

SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk also endorsed Amodei’s proposals, which included installing third-party monitors inside major AI laboratories.

Filing for an OpenAI IPO would require the company to disclose detailed financials, providing a fuller picture of the resources it is deploying to build more capable models. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent Saturday.

What a delayed OpenAI IPO means for the industry

An OpenAI IPO would be among the most closely watched listings in tech, potentially setting benchmarks for valuation and regulatory scrutiny across the sector. Altman’s comments suggest that, for now, governance and safety priorities outweigh pressures to enter public markets.

For investors tracking high-growth names, recent moves in tools like SPDR S&P 500 Growth may shape expectations around how an eventual OpenAI debut could be received.
