South Africa road crash leaves 21 dead on major national route
A South Africa road crash involving multiple vehicles on a major national route has left 21 people dead, according to authorities.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies said the early Monday collision on the N1 highway involved two Toyota minibus taxis and a Suzuki sport utility vehicle.
The crash in the Western Cape, the country’s southernmost province, was one of two major accidents reported in the past two days. Eight people were killed early Sunday near Ermelo in Mpumalanga province. Fatal traffic accidents remain a persistent challenge in South Africa.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation said Monday’s collision shut the N1 about 380km, or 240 miles, east of Cape Town, between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka.
The agency noted the death toll may change as emergency services and Western Cape authorities continue to assess the scene.
Spies said 18 victims were declared dead at the scene, and three others died in hospital, bringing the total to 21. Four additional people were seriously injured.
Nearly 11,500 people died in road accidents in 2025, according to the Transport Ministry.
In 2023, a head-on collision between a tour bus and a cash-in-transit truck in Limpopo province killed 20 people and injured at least 60 others.
