Bovine Tuberculosis has been confirmed in two beef herds in northern Michigan, according to state agriculture officials.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said the infections were identified in Iosco County. One herd was detected during routine whole-herd testing in the county. The other was found through a trace investigation linked to a prior case.
State officials noted that a positive cattle herd identified in May in Iosco County prompted whole-herd testing in Arenac, Iosco, and Ogemaw counties.
Bovine Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease that can infect all mammals, including people. The pathogen is also present in Michigan’s free-ranging white-tailed deer population, authorities said.
