Nigella Lawson Bake Off debut has ignited another round of viral chatter, years after her playful “microwave” pronunciation drew attention on British television. This time, viewers zeroed in on the food writer’s enthusiastic on-air bites during her first episode as a judge.

The quips poured in from fans of the long-running competition, known in the United States as “The Great British Baking Show” and in the United Kingdom as “The Great British Bake Off.” The series launched in 2010 on the BBC and has since built a global following.

Lawson stepped in for Prue Leith for season 17, which aired Tuesday in the United Kingdom and is set to premiere Friday in the United States on Netflix. Many longtime viewers expressed sadness at Leith’s departure, although the 86-year-old said it felt like the right time to step back.

While Lawson’s first turn in the tent drew largely positive notices, social media users also highlighted what they saw as a distinctive mannerism. One post joked that she could “unhinge” her jaw to tackle a slice of cake, while another said they “can’t stop laughing” at how eagerly she sampled desserts. Some comments were more pointed, calling the approach “really weird,” and parody clips of people taking exaggerated bites also circulated.

Nigella Lawson Bake Off reception remains broadly positive

The online ribbing did little to dampen wider enthusiasm for Lawson’s addition. Critics cited her culinary credentials, and many fans described her as a perfect fit for the show.

Giuseppe Dell’Anno, a former “Bake Off” champion, told BBC Radio 4’s Today program that Lawson aligns well with the show’s spirit. Longtime judge Paul Hollywood also welcomed her arrival, telling The Guardian that she “fitted in beautifully” with the team and quickly captured the show’s atmosphere.

Lawson appeared unfazed by the attention, leaning into the pleasure of tasting bakes in the tent. “I don’t have many skills,” she joked in the season’s first episode, “but eating is one of them.”

The series launched in 2010 on the BBC and has since built a global following, similar to how other media contests such as the NPR College Podcast Challenge have expanded their reach.
