The RAF Fairford incident led police in Gloucestershire to declare a major incident and order evacuations near the base after several men were arrested on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act, according to Gloucestershire Constabulary.
RAF Fairford is a key operating location in the United Kingdom for U.S. military aircraft. The base regularly hosts strategic platforms, including bombers and U-2 reconnaissance aircraft, and serves as a refueling and staging point for other aircraft moving between the United States and Europe. Earlier this year, bomber sorties launched from Fairford featured prominently in U.S. combat operations against Iran.
The constabulary said a number of properties in the Whelford area were being cleared following the declaration of a major incident.
Officials said the arrests triggered the evacuations.
Police added that British Army explosive ordnance disposal specialists were examining multiple vehicles and that residents were being directed to a nearby leisure center.
A police cordon has been established, and authorities said they believe the situation is contained. The force said it is working with partner agencies and following established contingency plans.
Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone said the response began around 12:45 a.m. local time Sunday after a report of three suspicious vehicles traveling toward RAF Fairford. Armed officers detained five men in the Whelford area on suspicion of committing offenses under the Explosives Act. The individuals were taken into custody.
Ocone said a 400-meter cordon was set around the vehicles while the Army’s explosive ordnance disposal unit conducted examinations. As a precaution, approximately 85 households were advised to evacuate.
Video circulating online appeared to show British military bomb disposal robots working on vans linked to the suspects. Authorities have not released further details about the vehicles or any items found.
A U.S. Air Force spokesperson said officials were aware of the situation and directed questions about off-base matters to local authorities. Unconfirmed reports from local aviation observers suggested RAF Fairford had moved to FPCON Delta, the highest alert level for U.S. installations, though the Air Force did not confirm this and said it would not discuss specific force protection measures for operational security reasons. The spokesperson said U.S. units in the United Kingdom remain vigilant and will take appropriate steps to safeguard personnel and facilities.
It was not immediately clear whether airfield operations at RAF Fairford had been affected. The U.S. Air Force did not provide additional comment, and the U.K. Ministry of Defence did not immediately respond to inquiries.
RAF Fairford frequently hosts forward-deployed U.S. strategic assets such as B-1B Lancers and is used as a transit point for a variety of aircraft crossing the Atlantic.
While there is no established link between the RAF Fairford incident and any group, the base has previously been referenced in hostile rhetoric from Iran. In July, an Iranian outlet with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed U.S. B-1 aircraft were flying from Fairford during operations against Iran and asserted that any base used to attack Iran would be considered a legitimate target.
Given its role in U.S. operations, RAF Fairford is a potential target for hostile activity. Analysts have also highlighted the risk of so-called hybrid or gray zone actions by Russia against Western military infrastructure across Europe.
Asked earlier this year about threats to the United Kingdom, a British government official said the armed forces stand ready to defend the country and its bases through a layered air and missile defense posture in coordination with NATO allies. The official cited recent investments to bolster air defense and counter-drone capabilities and sustain Royal Air Force Typhoon jets.
RAF Fairford incident update
A Temporary Flight Restriction was put in place over Whelford, Gloucestershire, following the arrests. The restriction applies to all aircraft, including small balloons, kites, unmanned aircraft systems, and parachutes, according to a notice.
Flights in the designated area are prohibited without permission. The restriction is scheduled to remain in effect through October 5.
This is a developing story.
