Morgan Stanley Q3 2026 earnings topped Wall Street expectations, driven by a powerful rebound in the firm’s equities trading franchise that offset weaker performance in other units.
Here is what the company reported:
- Earnings per share: $3.03, versus a $2.91 LSEG consensus
- Revenue: $20.34 billion, versus a $19.95 LSEG consensus
The bank said net income rose 6.5% to $4.91 billion, or $3.03 per share. Revenue increased 12% to $20.34 billion.
Details of Morgan Stanley Q3 2026 earnings performance
The equities trading unit, a flagship business for the firm, generated a 41% year-over-year revenue increase to $5.8 billion, exceeding internal StreetAccount expectations by roughly $909 million. The bank cited broad-based strength across products and regions, with Asia singled out as a particular bright spot in the quarter.
These gains helped balance softer results elsewhere. Fixed income trading revenue fell 7% to $2.01 billion, reflecting declines in credit and commodities, and that result trailed expectations by about $260 million.
Investment banking revenue edged up 2% to $2.16 billion, about $110 million below projections. The firm pointed to higher advisory fees on more completed mergers, while equity underwriting declined on fewer initial public offerings and fixed income underwriting also fell.
Assessing the quarter, a Wells Fargo analyst characterized the outcome as “good, but not great,” noting that some business metrics improved at a slower pace. Morgan Stanley shares fell about 3% on Wednesday.
Executive commentary and broader AI backdrop
Chief Executive Officer Ted Pick said the economy is being shaped by two opposing forces, the momentum from artificial intelligence development and the drag from geopolitical tensions. Starting in early September, he noted, overseas conflicts, inflation and rising yields cooled activity across Wall Street.
“The interaction of the AI phenomenon and geopolitics has been the dominant reality the whole year,” Pick said in a televised interview. He added that he is “cautiously optimistic” about market conditions in the fourth quarter.
The reference to artificial intelligence development aligns with broader industry efforts, including projects such as Google Project Suncatcher tests AI chips in orbit. Morgan Stanley’s equities performance also comes as investors closely watch other major financial institutions like Wells Fargo and competitors such as Goldman Sachs for signs of how trading and advisory businesses are adapting to the shifting macroeconomic landscape.
