The Vincent Kompany collapse at a Bayern Munich training session on Friday has left the manager undergoing further medical tests as the club prepares for a spell of several weeks without him, according to club officials. The Belgian coach is in a stable condition, though the exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined.

Kompany, 40, required medical attention after collapsing during a reserves session at the club’s training ground. He will remain under evaluation while doctors work to establish a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Board member for sport Max Eberl sought to reassure supporters, saying the manager is stable while the medical team conducts comprehensive assessments.

Club confirm stable condition as tests continue

Bayern officials said they are proceeding with caution as they await full test results. Eberl confirmed he had spoken with Kompany and his wife after the incident and emphasized that identifying the underlying cause is the priority.

The tests have produced some initial findings, but further results are needed to determine exactly what it is and how long recovery will take, Eberl said. He added that the club will not set timelines and that the absence is likely to be measured in weeks rather than days.

Viral infection precedes training ground health scare

The episode followed a recent illness. Kompany had been dealing with a viral infection since last week, which assistant Aaron Danks said affected the coach’s legs. He sat throughout Bayern’s 6-1 win over Leipzig and missed Tuesday’s training to rest at home, but returned to the touchline for the 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal.

After that match, Kompany acknowledged he had tried to push through the illness and had ignored warning signs from his body. Friday’s collapse came in the wake of that admission.

Lengthy absence expected for the Bayern boss

Bayern now must plan for a period without their manager, who has won the German league twice since arriving in 2024. The team visits Freiburg on Sunday as Bundesliga play resumes. Coaching staff are expected to oversee first-team duties while Kompany focuses on recovery.

As the club braces for a challenging stretch, attention will also turn to how Bayern copes in domestic and European competition, much as other elite sides have navigated key absences during pivotal campaigns, from league title races to major tournaments like the World Series.
