IEEE International Leadership Conference to guide tech leaders

The IEEE International Leadership Conference is set to help mid-career STEM professionals navigate the move from technical specialist to organizational leader. Scheduled for 3 and 4 October in Budapest, the event will focus on systems thinking, adaptive leadership, and aligning teams around strategy. Registration is open.

IEEE International Leadership Conference: thinking beyond technical work

Stepping into leadership requires shifting from individual technical output to understanding how engineering choices fit within broader business, operational, and ethical contexts, according to IEEE Life Senior Member Daniel Sniezek, cochair of the conference program committee. He says leaders build trust, align innovation with organizational goals, and empower teams rather than serving as the sole expert. Over time, he adds, leadership becomes less about personal advancement and more about the legacy created through people, shared knowledge, and inspired innovation.

Solving the intrapreneur’s dilemma

Advocating for disruptive ideas inside established companies does not mean working against the organization. It means acting like an owner, not just a task-taker. Emerging leaders are encouraged to identify hidden value, cultivate trust, and frame bold proposals as solutions to long-term strategic needs.

IEEE Senior Member Deyasini Majumdar, also a program cochair, advises professionals to practice leadership and strategic thinking proactively. Within constraints, she notes, there are opportunities to innovate, and effective leaders engineer solutions even in difficult conditions.

A multidirectional exchange

The conference highlights leadership as a two-way exchange across generations. While emerging leaders can gain strategic guidance from seasoned executives, established leaders also benefit by remaining active learners. Majumdar emphasizes the importance for senior leaders of maintaining openness, adapting quickly, and growing with colleagues.

A continuous-learning mindset helps leaders stay agile in a fast-changing technological environment and bridges generational perspectives. Whether moving from expert to manager or from executive to mentor, transformational leadership centers on enabling others’ growth and impact.

Building influence and impact at the IEEE International Leadership Conference

To support these transitions, the IEEE International Leadership Conference will offer distributed sessions addressing career inflection points. Topics include evaluating promotions or new roles, exercising lateral influence, pitching innovative projects, and sustaining leadership energy as responsibilities expand.

Attendees will explore questions such as how to weigh career moves without discarding hard-won experience, how to lead through credibility and collaboration without formal authority, how to apply an entrepreneurial mindset to create value and gain sponsorship, and how to recognize and avoid early signs of burnout. Organizers say the program is designed to equip participants with systems thinking and communication skills to build influence. Leadership, they add, is not only about reaching the top but multiplying impact through collaboration across the broader ecosystem.
