Brad Lightcap leaves OpenAI after eight years in senior roles, marking another high-profile departure as the artificial intelligence company positions itself for a potential initial public offering.
Lightcap, a veteran executive who previously served as chief financial officer and chief operating officer, most recently led a special projects team. He shared a farewell note with employees on Tuesday and reposted it to X, calling the move bittersweet and saying he is departing to start something new. He added that he intends to continue supporting OpenAI’s mission from a different vantage point and will remain available to staff for a few weeks.
OpenAI pointed to Lightcap’s public post when asked for comment. Lightcap did not immediately respond to separate requests for comment.
His exit follows a string of recent leadership changes. In July, Fidji Simo said she would move into an advisory role at the company. Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI’s head of safety systems, also left in July. Other recent departures include AI ethics lead Chloé Bakalar and chief futurist Joshua Achiam, according to the Financial Times.
Lightcap moved to the special projects role in April. An internal memo at the time said he would report to CEO Sam Altman and work to expand OpenAI’s enterprise software sales through private equity partnerships. Some of his commercial responsibilities shifted to Denise Dresser, who had recently been appointed chief revenue officer.
Before joining OpenAI in 2018, Lightcap was an investor at Y Combinator, worked in strategic finance at Dropbox, and served as an investment banking analyst at J.P. Morgan.
