Michigan’s title run tainted by sign-stealing scandal
McCarthy rose to prominence by guiding Michigan to its first national championship since 1997, but the accomplishment has been scrutinized. In August 2025, the NCAA levied substantial penalties on Michigan over a sign-stealing scheme that began before the 2023 title run.

Season-ending injury
As a rookie in 2024, McCarthy was expected to back up Sam Darnold. That plan collapsed when he tore his meniscus following the Vikings’ preseason opener, ending his first season almost immediately.
He spent the year rehabbing instead of gaining on-field and practice reps. Darnold capitalized, steering Minnesota to a 14-3 record before leaving in free agency for Seattle, a move the Vikings allowed in part due to their faith in McCarthy.

Success followed by more injuries
Healthy to start 2025, McCarthy opened as Minnesota’s starter and delivered a dramatic Monday night debut win at Chicago, earning NFC Offensive Player of the Week. He became the first NFL quarterback to produce three fourth-quarter touchdowns in his first game, finishing 13 of 20 for 143 yards with two passing scores, one interception, and a rushing touchdown.
The surge faded a week later in a six-point home loss to Atlanta, where he threw for 158 yards with two interceptions. He was then diagnosed with a high ankle sprain that sidelined him for five games.

After a 23-6 loss to Green Bay in which he threw for 87 yards and two interceptions, the team disclosed he had a concussion that kept him out of a Week 13 defeat to Seattle. He returned with two of his best outings, tossing three touchdowns in a 31-0 win over Washington, then a season-high 250 yards with two touchdowns and a pick in a 34-26 victory at Dallas.
In Week 16 against the Giants, McCarthy sustained a hairline fracture in his throwing hand, missed Week 17 against the Lions, then returned in Week 18 to post 182 yards in a season-ending win over the Packers. The uneven rookie campaign raised doubts inside the organization about his long-term fit.
He finished with more interceptions (12) than touchdown passes (11) and a 57.6% completion rate, with injuries a consistent factor and a catalyst for seeking competition in the offseason.
