British Airways A380 business class is set for a major expansion as the carrier revamps its largest jets and related ground services, a signal that airlines continue to prioritize higher-paying customers.

The airline said it is building what it calls the world’s largest business-class cabin on its Airbus A380 fleet and overhauling lounges at its London Heathrow hub. The changes are part of a broader refresh across cabins and services.

British Airways A380 business class grows as cabins shift

British Airways will reconfigure its 12 Airbus A380s with a 106-seat business-class cabin, up from 97 in the current layout. First class will be updated and reduced to 12 suites from 14. Premium economy will increase to 84 seats from 55. Standard economy will decrease to 215 seats from 303.

Airlines have poured significant investment into premium seating in recent years, responding to strong demand for roomier cabins and more upscale travel experiences. According to the carrier and industry trends, those seats can command substantial premiums. Extra-legroom options on transatlantic flights can exceed 200 dollars per leg, with surcharges of more than 1,000 dollars for premium economy after purchase. Fares for top-tier seats often reach 5,000 dollars and can run well above 10,000 dollars on longer routes.

British Airways’ joint-venture partner American Airlines recently introduced a 70-seat business-class cabin on its largest Boeing aircraft, underscoring the industry-wide push toward premium revenue. The focus on upscale cabins has at times contributed to delivery delays of new aircraft, as carriers await complex seat components and regulatory approvals.

The overhaul of the A380 cabins is also a renewed wager on the superjumbo itself. While several airlines have retired the double-decker in favor of smaller, more fuel-efficient jets, British Airways is choosing to invest in its 12 A380s. Airbus delivered the final A380 to the aircraft’s largest operator, Emirates, in late 2021.
