Carson Beck preseason debut offered the Arizona Cardinals a promising first look, even as past examples suggest early August performances are rarely definitive.
Questions trailed Beck from his Georgia days, where he was often labeled a steady hand rather than a playmaker while surrounded by elite talent. Following departures of Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey to the NFL, his 2024 form wavered. An elbow injury before halftime of the SEC Championship Game closed his Bulldogs tenure. He chose to transfer to Miami instead of entering the draft, a move he has described as pivotal to reassessing and improving his game.
In the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, Beck flashed what could translate at the next level. Slotted third on Arizona’s depth chart behind Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew, the rookie profiles as a poised operator who can run an offense on time. At Georgia, his first-down rate of 38.6% ranked in the 95th percentile among draft-eligible quarterbacks from 2015 to 2026, and he got the ball out faster than anyone else in this rookie class. That fits Mike LaFleur’s scheme, which emphasizes quick processing and distribution.
Former Titans general manager Ran Carthon, now a podcast co-host, outlined a simple checklist for Beck’s preseason debut earlier in the week: operate efficiently, manage the huddle and motions, handle the stage, and “play point guard” by getting the ball to playmakers. Beck delivered on those points. He is not known for high-variance throws, with a college big-time-throw rate near 3% compared with Justin Herbert’s 9.2% in 2017, but he attacked early and stayed decisive.
By night’s end, Beck went 15 of 19 for 188 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers. It was an encouraging snapshot for Cardinals fans. Still, history shows a single preseason outing does not forecast a career arc. Many quarterbacks have dazzled in early August only to struggle later, and others stumbled in their first taste of the NFL before developing into reliable starters.

So what does this mean for the 2026 rookie QB class?
Preseason matters for coaches and players competing for roles, but a single game is not a forecast. Prescott looked like a franchise quarterback from the outset and became one. Pickett debuted well yet has bounced between teams.
Goff and Stroud struggled initially and then rose to Pro Bowl level. Beck’s first appearance should be viewed as encouraging, not conclusive. He executed Arizona’s plan, processed quickly and took timely shots. The real measure will be how he builds on this start as the competition and stakes rise.
