Australian startup Eclipse Ingredients is preparing to bring human lactoferrin to market next year, beginning with cosmetics and then moving into adult nutrition, with infant formula as a longer-term objective. The company says demand for human lactoferrin is strong and that it has validated use cases across multiple categories.

The firm has signed memorandums of understanding with five distributors and initiated tech transfer to pilot scale, according to cofounder and CEO Siobhan Coster. She said the company is advancing on two technology platforms and progressing at a rapid pace for the sector.

Why human lactoferrin vs bovine?

Coster said human and bovine lactoferrin are distinct proteins, noting about a 30% difference in amino acid composition between the two. The human version is produced for human biology and the bovine version for calves. Internal testing on human cells shows stronger performance for the human protein, she said.

Evidence for benefits in adults

While lactoferrin is most concentrated in breast milk, Coster emphasized that it is made throughout the body and present in immune cells, tears, and saliva. She cited clinical evidence for roles in iron regulation, inflammation reduction, and healthy aging, with potential applications across women’s health, sports nutrition, and longevity.

Market validation and first applications

Coster said Eclipse Ingredients spent years assessing demand before developing its offering. The initial focus is the cosmetics market, where the company reports strong interest and near-term commercialization plans.

Manufacturing, partnerships, and scale-up

To avoid heavy capital outlays, Eclipse Ingredients is using an asset-light model that leverages four partnerships with research organizations. These give access to infrastructure and expertise from micro-liter plate work up to 2,000-liter pilot scale, Coster said. The company plans staged scale-up, beginning with lower-volume segments and building toward infant formula, which will require significantly larger production.

Process advances and technology platforms

Over the past 18 months, Eclipse Ingredients built its first proprietary technology platform and has a second in development. Applied AI is embedded across operations. The company has started tech transfer to pilot scale and is preparing to transfer to a commercial manufacturer.

Business model and go-to-market

Eclipse Ingredients operates as a B2B ingredients supplier. Coster said the team is pursuing distribution partnerships and has already signed MOUs with five distributors, with more under discussion, and is planning a global launch next year.

Positioning in a growing human lactoferrin field

Coster described the addressable markets as large and capable of supporting multiple suppliers. She said Eclipse aims to lead through its two-platform approach and swift execution, moving from its initial fundraising to an approaching commercial launch in roughly two years.

Target markets and regulatory outlook

The company is pursuing a global regulatory strategy. Initial targets are APAC and the United States, with the European Union to follow due to longer approval timelines, Coster said.

Commercial traction and next steps in human lactoferrin

For cosmetics, Eclipse Ingredients reports local regulatory compliance and strong customer traction. Next, it will target adult nutrition, including precision nutrition and food-as-medicine segments. Infant formula remains the long-term goal, with more detailed regulatory dossiers and extended review periods expected.

The company’s work on infant formula and dairy-related applications intersects with broader conversations about the sector, such as those highlighted in USDA directive won’t halt dairy sustainability efforts. Eclipse Ingredients’ long-term ambitions will likely evolve alongside changing regulatory and sustainability expectations.
