Edin Dzeko retires from international football after Bosnia-Herzegovina’s 1-1 draw with Sweden in the Nations League, bringing an emotional close to the 40-year-old forward’s record-setting career with the national team.
In Zenica, the former Manchester City striker thought he had scored late in the first half, but the effort was ruled out because the ball had gone out of play during the move. The match paused after 11 minutes for fireworks marking his number 11 shirt on his 152nd appearance. He received a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 62nd minute.
The tributes continued after full time with an on-field ceremony, a guard of honour and a drone display spelling out messages of thanks. During his lap of honour, supporters threw soft toys onto the pitch in appreciation.
Sweden had taken the lead through Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres, before Kerim Alajbegovic levelled for Bosnia-Herzegovina.
