Mexico pork import restrictions that were linked to a pseudorabies detection earlier this year have been lifted, fully reopening the market to a range of U.S. pork products.
Erin Borror of the U.S. Meat Export Federation said Mexico first adopted precautionary limits after the disease was identified in Iowa at the end of April. According to Borror, the initial action halted shipments of offal, jowls, skins, fat, snout, stomach, and several other items for about six weeks.
Speaking at the Iowa Farm Bureau Economic Summit on Friday, she noted that the measures were later narrowed to pork originating from Iowa and Texas.
Borror said the remaining Mexico pork import restrictions were lifted at the start of this week. She credited the U.S. Department of Agriculture and partner groups, including the National Pork Producers Council, for helping secure the policy change.
Mexico is the largest overseas destination for U.S. pork and accounts for roughly one-third of total U.S. pork export volume.

With the rollback complete, exporters expect normal trade to resume for the full range of affected pork products.

The National Pork Producers Council has been a key advocate for U.S. pork producers during the restrictions. Many producers in states like Iowa also rely on agronomic practices such as cover crop plantings to support long-term soil health and productivity.
