New research examining traffic noise Parkinson’s risk suggests long-term exposure to road noise may be tied to a higher likelihood of developing Parkinson’s disease, based on an 18-year analysis of Danish residents.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition affecting more than 11 million people worldwide, a figure projected to more than double by 2050 as populations age. Identifying modifiable risks is increasingly important, researchers say.
Tracking 3.1 million adults in Denmark aged 40 and older from 2000 to 2017, scientists reported a modest but consistent association between higher traffic noise and Parkinson’s incidence. The findings, detailed on July 20 in JAMA Neurology, represent the largest investigation to date on this question.
Chronic noise is still relatively new in Parkinson’s risk research, one study co-author said in remarks to a newspaper, adding that the results should prompt additional work on how disruptive sounds might relate to the disorder.

Parkinson’s disease involves motor symptoms such as tremors, slowed movement, muscle rigidity, and balance problems. It stems from the loss of brain cells that produce dopamine, a chemical crucial for movement control.
Earlier work in 2025 found that exposure to loud noise produced motor impairments in mice engineered to model Parkinson’s. Smaller studies in Canada and the Netherlands have also reported links between traffic noise and the disease.
Experts who reviewed the new analysis noted that it advances prior research by using a far larger cohort and by accounting for potential confounders including socioeconomic status and environmental variables.
For the Danish study, investigators used the national patient registry to identify Parkinson’s diagnoses and linked them to estimated road-traffic noise at the most and least exposed sides of participants’ homes. Adjustments included age, sex, income, education, and household composition, pulled from national registers.
Nearly 20,600 people were diagnosed over the study period. The analysis showed that every 11.5-decibel increase at the most exposed facade was associated with a 3 percent rise in Parkinson’s risk. On the least exposed side, each 9-decibel increase corresponded to a 4 percent rise.
A 10-decibel difference between the two sides appeared to mitigate risk. The association persisted across demographic, environmental, and socioeconomic subgroups.
An accompanying editorial by independent experts said the results suggest road traffic noise could be a novel environmental risk factor for Parkinson’s.
While the study did not examine biological mechanisms, prior research indicates that noise can disrupt sleep and activate stress responses that boost production of reactive oxygen species. These molecules can damage cells and are implicated in Parkinson’s pathology.
One outside commentator said noise may impair protective brain mechanisms and promote processes involved in disease development, even if it does not directly kill nerve cells.
Another expert noted that noise is more likely a general stressor than a specific cause, and emphasized the design cannot prove causation.
The findings add to concerns about noise pollution and public health.
In Europe, an estimated one in five people are exposed to harmful road noise levels. The study authors wrote that ensuring access to a quiet area within the home may help reduce potential neurodegenerative effects of chronic noise exposure.
