Katie Boulter advanced to the Japan Open quarter-finals with a swift victory over Viktorija Golubic, wrapping up the match in under an hour in Osaka.
The British number two overpowered the Swiss player 6-2 6-1 and will meet either Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic or American Kayla Day in the next round.
Boulter faced an early test when she saved a break point in the opening game. From 2-2 in the first set she seized control, stringing together nine straight games before Golubic managed to hold in the penultimate game.
The 30-year-old ceded the British number one ranking to Sonny Kartal on Monday. Her progress this week is expected to move her back into top spot.
Seeded eighth in Osaka, Boulter said she was satisfied with how she coped with blustery conditions that affected ball flight and timing.
“I think one of the biggest things for me is staying patient in the wind,” she said. “Sometimes I can get a little frustrated, and I’m very pleased that I didn’t allow that to affect me today and I think I ended up playing some really good tennis in the second set. I’m really pleased with the performance.”
