New Zealand defense chief resigns after acknowledging past errors of judgment linked to an undisclosed relationship, according to an announcement conveyed to Defense Minister Paul Goldsmith.

Air Marshal Tony Davies informed the minister that he is stepping down as Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force. Officials said planning is underway to transfer duties to Vice Chief of Defence Force Rear Adm. Mat Williams, who will serve as Acting Chief of Defence Force.

In a statement, Davies said the decision was for personal reasons and stemmed from mistakes that ran counter to Defence Force values. He added that the matters involved an inappropriate relationship while he held a unit command position, and he regretted not disclosing it when he had the chance.

Davies served as Chief of Air Force beginning in 2016, then as Vice Chief of Defence Force from 2018. Born in 1966, he was promoted on June 6, 2024, when he was appointed Chief of Defence Force.

The Chief of Army, Maj. Gen. Rose King, will act as Chief of Defence Force until Sunday, after which Williams will assume the acting role.

New Zealand defense chief resigns and leadership transition

Authorities said the leadership handover will proceed in stages, with King bridging the role before Williams takes over as Acting Chief of Defence Force.

The New Zealand Defence Force serves as the primary military organization of the country and operates under the authority of the New Zealand Ministry of Defence.

Regional military developments, such as the USS Theodore Roosevelt in Yokosuka marks rare carrier visit, often draw comparisons with changes in defense leadership among allied nations.

The announcement regarding Davies’s resignation comes at a time when allied forces are closely coordinating through frameworks like the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, even as New Zealand continues to maintain its own independent defense posture.
