IEEE Life Fellow Manfred “Fred” J. Schindler has been elected the 2027 IEEE president-elect, and he is scheduled to begin his term as president on 1 January 2028.

According to the organization, Schindler was nominated by the IEEE Board of Directors and received 16,421 votes in the ballot. Senior Member David Alan Koehler received 13,874 votes.

The results remain unofficial until the IEEE Board of Directors accepts the IEEE Teller’s Committee report, expected in November.

A specialist in microwave semiconductor technology, Schindler works as an independent consultant, advising clients on technical matters, due diligence, and project management.

Over his career, he has guided the development of microwave integrated-circuit technologies from laboratory prototypes to high-volume commercial products. He has authored numerous technical papers and holds 11 patents.

His industry leadership includes serving as CTO at Anlotek and as a director for Qorvo and RFMD’s Boston design center. He previously was an applications manager at IBM, an engineering manager at ATN Microwave, and a lab manager at Raytheon.

2027 IEEE president-elect brings decades of service

Schindler has volunteered with IEEE for more than three decades. He was the 2024 vice president of IEEE Technical Activities and served as Division IV director from 2021 to 2022.

He chaired the IEEE Conferences Committee from 2015 to 2018 and led the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTTS) as president in 2003.

His contributions have been recognized with the MTTS 2018 Distinguished Service Award and the 2015 N. Walter Cox Award. Since 2011, his award-winning micro-business column has appeared in IEEE Microwave Magazine.

He also chaired the 2025 One IEEE to Enable Strategic Investments in Innovations and Public Imperative Activities ad hoc committee.

Schindler is an IEEE–Eta Kappa Nu honorary life member and an MTTS honorary life member. His long record of technical innovation echoes work highlighted in coverage of the Digit 5 debuts as safety-first humanoid for warehouse work.
