Mobile Tactical Cannon program advances with Hanwha K9 bid

The U.S. Army has selected Hanwha Defense USA to develop prototypes for the Mobile Tactical Cannon program, moving the effort into a rapid prototyping phase that could ultimately replace the service’s towed M777 howitzers.

According to an Army announcement, the competitively awarded Other Transaction Authority agreement will fund up to 18 wheeled self-propelled howitzer systems for prototyping, testing, and soldier experimentation over roughly four years. The initial action totals $100,302,961 and could reach a cumulative value of $262,903,274.

Hanwha Defense USA confirmed it will supply its wheeled 155mm K9 Mobile Howitzer, also referred to as the K9A2, for the effort. The company had previously named the K9MH as its entry. Other firms that had competed include American Rheinmetall, BAE Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems, and Elbit Systems USA.

The agreement calls for accelerated delivery of six prototype systems, with an option for 12 more. The Army said soldiers will put the platforms through operational experiments to evaluate performance, reliability, and supportability in conditions that emulate combat.

The service framed the approach as part of a broader push to rapidly field more lethal capabilities, capture immediate soldier feedback, and adapt to emerging multi-domain threats. The Army is pursuing the program through its official modernization enterprise and related rapid prototyping pathways.

The K9MH draws on Hanwha’s earlier tracked K9 lineage, which is already fielded by South Korea and multiple partners, including Australia, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, India, Norway, Poland, and Turkey. Both tracked and wheeled variants mount a 52-caliber 155mm cannon, which is longer than the 39-caliber barrel on the M777.

Barrel length typically correlates with greater range. Hanwha lists the K9MH’s maximum range at just over 37 miles, though it is unclear if that figure depends on rocket-assisted or other specialized munitions. The M777’s maximum range with specialized rounds is just under 20 miles.

As an 8×8 self-propelled system, the K9MH offers integrated mobility absent in the towed M777. Hanwha notes emplacement and displacement times under 30 seconds to support shoot-and-scoot tactics.

The vehicle carries 40 rounds onboard and can be rapidly replenished in the field by the K10 resupply vehicle. Hanwha executives said they intend to anchor production in the United States, citing Opelika, Alabama, as the first-phase launch point.

They highlighted the company’s track record localizing programs in Australia, Egypt, Poland, and Romania, and emphasized leveraging Korean industrial processes to strengthen U.S. manufacturing across sectors such as shipbuilding, munitions, and combat vehicles.

What the prototypes could replace

The Army has studied a wheeled self-propelled successor to the M777 since at least 2019 and previously staged shoot-offs of candidate systems. Officials stressed that advancing Hanwha’s bid in the Mobile Tactical Cannon program does not guarantee a fielding decision.

Data from the experiments will inform senior leaders on future force structure. If approved, the new system would replace M777s in select formations, with the Army pointing to expected gains in lethality, mobility, reliability, and survivability in an increasingly transparent battlefield.

Past contracting notices indicate an initial focus on Brigade Combat Teams equipped with Stryker vehicles. Airborne, airmobile, and light infantry brigades that currently operate M777s could also be considered for transition to wheeled self-propelled howitzers.

While there has been discussion about eventually replacing portions of the M109-series tracked 155mm fleet, the current Mobile Tactical Cannon effort is aimed at the towed M777. Debates over wheeled versus tracked howitzers continue.

Tracked systems typically excel off road and offer more protection, but they are heavier, can be more expensive to procure and sustain, and may be harder to transport. Senior Army leaders have cited lessons from Ukraine, where both sides rely on a mix of towed and self-propelled artillery.

They underscored the premium on mobility and speed as drones and longer kill chains heighten risks to assets that linger in place. Similar modernization debates are playing out across the Pentagon, including in missile defense, where programs such as FBM Radar Next are seeking more mobile architectures.

Part of a wider modernization push for Mobile Tactical Cannon

Mobile Tactical Cannon sits within the Army’s Self-Propelled Howitzer-Modernization effort, which could also pursue a new tracked system. Previous high-profile attempts to replace the M109, including the XM2001 Crusader and the XM1299 under Extended Range Cannon Artillery, were canceled.

The Army attributed the XM1299’s termination in 2024 in part to technical challenges associated with its longer 58-caliber barrel, despite demonstrated ranges of about 40 miles. Since then, the service has invested in advanced long-range munitions, including ramjet-powered shells.

The selection marks another milestone for South Korea’s defense industry, which has expanded exports in recent years. Poland has become a major buyer of Korean systems, including K9 variants.

Continued progress in the U.S. Mobile Tactical Cannon program could provide Hanwha with a significant foothold in the American market. The company’s broader defense portfolio is detailed on the Hanwha corporate website, which highlights similar artillery exports and industrial partnerships.

With this award, the Army moves a step closer to potentially fielding a new wheeled 155mm self-propelled howitzer to modernize its artillery formations.
