Open House New York arrives this weekend alongside open studio events in Sunset Park and Gowanus, offering New Yorkers a full slate of exhibitions, performances, and tours across the five boroughs.
Following a packed long weekend, many residents are likely to set aside their to-do lists to take advantage of the city’s cultural calendar. Sunset Park and Gowanus will welcome visitors for annual open studios that coincide with broader Open House New York programming. A selection of notable OHNY offerings appears at the end of this roundup.
In recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, citywide programming turns the spotlight to Native artists. A roundup of seven exhibitions across Manhattan, the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College, and the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook highlights artists from diverse communities who confront stereotypes, preserve and refashion traditional forms, and bring overlooked histories to the fore.
Associate Editor Phillip Pyle also spoke with Diné artist and composer Raven Chacon, who led an hour-long improvisational sound performance at the Park Avenue Armory last week. In related news, the Gochman Family Collection will open its Katonah venue next month to showcase contemporary Indigenous art.
City cultural funding is also in the headlines. The Department of Cultural Affairs recently announced that city-funded artists’ grants have doubled from 5,000 dollars to 10,000 dollars.
Beginning October 19, grant recipients will gain access to the Materials for the Arts warehouse on the second Monday of each month, according to the department. Enjoy the weekend’s offerings, from neighborhood studios to seasonal festivities like the Tompkins Square Dog Halloween Parade.

7 New York Exhibitions That Embody Indigenous Survivance
To mark Indigenous Peoples’ Day, seven ongoing shows of Native art and history span Manhattan, the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College, and the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. Through solo and group presentations, artists from communities across Turtle Island challenge narratives of dispossession, subvert stereotypes, sustain and reinvent heritage practices, and surface underrepresented histories.
From Our Critics
Pleasure Dome: Continuum at SoMad
“The gathering became a fête of therapeutic sound, queer political rally, vaudeville tribute, and a vibe manifesto for a city that is constantly shattering the old to make way for the new.”
KLAB at Salma Sarriedine gallery
“In Ridikkuluz’s work, the irascible dog emerges as a symbol for the ongoing genocide and its unrestrained perpetrators.”
settle for a good fantasy at Luhring Augustine
“In one set of eight prints, the artist rubs dark makeup from her eyes, a gesture reminiscent of crying. As her eyeshadow smears, it leaves what look like bruises, creating a dissonant, double feeling of pain and pleasure, and the acknowledgment that it’s all just an act.”
Betty Parsons: An Expanded World at the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College
“Regardless of the aesthetic merit or caliber of the work, this artist, like any other, deserves to have her own space free of another artist’s intervention because she is well able to stand on her own two feet.”
