In a combative UN speech, President Donald Trump criticized global institutions, emphasized national sovereignty, and highlighted American military strength. The UN speech came as Trump held bilateral and group meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung, and leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman.
According to the UAE’s foreign minister, the wider session with Arab and Islamic leaders addressed regional dynamics in the Middle East and explored ways to bolster security and stability.
UN speech and global tensions
Earlier in the day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a farewell address urging major powers to recognize the limits of their influence. He warned that “fault lines” in the world are widening amid geopolitical rivalries, wars, climate change, and the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
Trump, by contrast, accused international bodies of advancing what he called a far-left agenda driven by “globalist bureaucrats” who are not elected. He argued there is “no global government,” stressing that the United States would prioritize national sovereignty and rely on its “unmatched” military capabilities when necessary.
He cautioned that Washington would not permit threats to gain a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. “If necessary, we will use our unmatched military might to secure the vital national interests of the United States,” he said.
Turning to Cuba, Trump alleged that the island’s communist government has fostered connections with left-wing organizations in the United States, including the Communist Party USA, Antifa, and the Democratic Socialists of America. As he criticized Havana, calling Cuba a “failed state,” members of the Cuban delegation appeared to leave the assembly chamber.
